FIRST AID

Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, what is it? Under this legislation all employers, and self-employed, are required to provide ‘sufficient equipment’ and ‘suitably qualified personnel’ in the event of someone become unwell or injured as a result of their workplace activities.

To demonstrate compliance against this legislation a workplace First Aid Risk Assessment MUST be completed to identify the potential injuries and illnesses associated with the hazards identified. If you are unsure on the level of training required for your site your First Aid Risk Assessment can be used to determine this against guidance document L74 from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Guidance document L74 First Aid at Work from the HSE has been created to aid all businesses, no matter how small or large, in successfully providing the necessary resources to fully comply legally with Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and to provide a morally duty of care.

If you are unsure on your requirements with first aid in your workplace, contact us to discuss these concerns.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Unlike physical first aid where a first aider might provide immediate treatment for a physical injury or illness, mental health first aiders are there to spot the early warning signs and provide someone for your employees to talk too.

Approximately 51% of long-term sickness is a result of a mental health condition such as: stress, depression or anxiety. Therefor, providing mental health first aiders within the workplace can enable your business to ensure your employees feel valued and supported during their journey with stress, depression or anxiety.

Currently there is no specific law which requires each business to have a mental health first aider, unlike the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 which requires first aiders, however, there is currently a mental health bill being discussed within parliament with the potential to make mental health first aiders within the workplace a legal requirement.

However, the benefits of having mental health first aiders within the workplace far outweigh the cons, such as:

  1. Provides reassurance to employees that their health is important
  2. Enables businesses to spot the early warning signs
  3. Promotes a positive culture within the workplace of talking about mental health
  4. Aids in reducing sickness and lost time
  5. Increases work productivity

SAFEGUARDING

What is Safeguarding? A definition provided by NHS England is ‘Safeguarding means protecting a citizen’s health, wellbeing and human rights; enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect’.

Currently there is four main industries which require a focus on safeguarding, these are: Education, Healthcare, Early years and Childcare and Social Work. Within these industries the training can vary from awareness training or training for ‘Designated Safeguarding Leads’.

Being competent in the understanding of early signs and symptoms of safeguarding concerns will protect the child, young person or vulnerable adults from harm, abuse and neglect.

FIRE SAFETY

Under The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 employers are required to provide employees with ‘information, instruction and training to employees about fire precautions in the workplace’.

For the efficient delivery of Fire Safety Training four areas are required to be understood. These are:

  1. Prevention, rules and regulations
  2. What to do if there’s a fire
  3. Equipment and good practice
  4. Fire alarms

It is important that this training IS NOT designed to turn you into a firefighter. Fire Safety training is delivered to aid your business in preventing a fire from fire safety controls in-line with your Fire Risk Assessment and to provide your employees with the understanding of what to do in the event of discovering a fire.

If you are unsure on your requirements with fire safety in your workplace, contact us to discuss these concerns.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

‘The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires you to provide whatever information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of your employees’ INDG345.

All businesses aim to provide a safe working environment for their employees but this can only be achieved when your employees have a good understanding of health and safety within the workplace. Do they have the understanding of safety signage, legislation, PPE and other relevant regulations to your workplace.

Providing health and safety training to your employees enables your business to:

  1. Prevent workplace accidents and illnesses occurring
  2. Avoid financial fines and costs with poor health and safety
  3. Reduction in damaged products
  4. Reduction lost production
  5. Increase workplace safety culture

But who needs health and safety training? Well, everyone does from the employees, managers and supervisors.

Whether it’s a awareness course or IOSH course, health and safety training will demonstrate your legal compliance in providing the relevant training to your business.
